Sedum morganianum, commonly known as the Burro’s Tail or Donkey’s Tail, is a distinctive trailing succulent admired for its cascading stems and soft, blue-green leaves. It forms long, pendulous stems that can exceed 30 centimetres in length, densely covered with overlapping, lance-shaped, fleshy leaves. Each leaf has a glaucous surface that gives it a cool, silvery tone and a smooth, waxy texture. The plant’s plump foliage creates an elegant, beaded appearance that makes it ideal for hanging baskets or elevated planters. In spring and summer, clusters of star-shaped flowers appear at the tips of mature stems, ranging in colour from pale pink to deep reddish-purple, adding gentle contrast to the blue-green foliage.
Growing Conditions
Sedum morganianum thrives in bright light and warm, dry conditions typical of its native habitat in southern Mexico. It grows best in full sun or bright, indirect light indoors. A well-draining cactus or succulent compost is essential to prevent excess moisture around the roots. Water sparingly, allowing the soil to dry completely between waterings, particularly in cooler months. Ideal temperatures range between eighteen and twenty-six degrees Celsius. Protect the plant from frost and avoid misting, as water droplets may mark the leaves or cause rot. Handle gently, as the fleshy leaves detach easily from the stems.
Care and Maintenance
This species requires minimal care once established. Feed every six weeks in spring and summer using a diluted, low-nitrogen fertiliser. Prune lightly to remove damaged stems and encourage fuller growth. Propagate easily from stem cuttings placed in dry compost until roots form. Repot infrequently, as it prefers a snug container.
Environmental Benefits
Sedum morganianum enhances indoor collections with its sculptural form and subtle colour palette. Its drought tolerance and trailing habit make it an attractive, sustainable choice for low-maintenance interiors.
